4 Benefits of Regular Drain Cleaning

How often do you clean the drains in your home? How often should you clean the drains? What methods should you use for proper drain cleaning? Proper drain cleaning is needed to remove clogs and keep the drains running correctly and can prevent future problems with the drains in your home.

Reduce Blockages

When you take the time to clean the drains regularly, you can prevent blockages. Small blockages can be annoying when you shower or use the sink, but a serious clog can be concerning. Sewer drain cleaning may be necessary to keep the drains flowing freely. When the sewer system builds up, it ends up causing problems when you flush the toilet as they can start to overflow.

Limit Smells

Sewers have an odor that is hard to get rid of. It is challenging to deal with these odors, which is why you need regular drain cleaning. Sewer cleaning is a simple way to keep the drains clean and free of odors. If you notice the p-traps in your home start to smell, have them professionally cleaned. This is the best way to make sure the drains are going to be free of odors.

Clean Home

When the drains are cleaned, it helps to prevent serious cleanliness concerns. It is important to have the drains correctly cleaned to ensure they will be free of odors and things that are unsanitary. If the sewers build up, they can overflow and lead to a serious hygienic concern in the home. Having the drains cleaned yearly is a great way to prevent them from becoming too full and leading to blockages that can overflow into the home. Basements are particularly concerning as it is easy for them to flood. Some homeowners may not be aware of the concerning problems with sewage systems overflowing until it is too late.

Reduce Expenses

Keeping the drains cleaned early on can prevent serious problems with the drains overflowing and leading to unsanitary conditions in the home. It is beneficial to plan on having professional plumbers not only clean the lines but look for other concerns as well. Older pipes can start to break down and can easily end up with tree roots inside them. With cameras, a professional will be able to see inside the pipes to determine how bad the condition looks. Pipe replacement is expensive and frustrating for many people as it does take time to complete the job, and you are unable to use the pipes in your home for several days.

    • Wow, Dave. Damned with not even faint praise. (grin.) Can’t figure out if this will encourage people to Bear Meadows, as in Brer Rabbit’s exhortation to not go near the brier patch, or if it is truly that fearful a place. Did that bear really appear right next to you?At present, during our heat wave in MO, I’m not even making it to the woods at the end of our street, but I’ll eschew the cat videos if you don’t mind and stick to PBS. (grin)

    • I tend to agree with you.To make Gal pre-date 1 Cor, one would have to argue that Gal somehow saved the day for Paul and turned round. This would have a hard time explaining, however, Paul’s silence about Galatia in 2 Cor and Rom. A second turning away of the Galatians lacks parsimony.

  1. Thanks for the information. I had no idea that there are so many benefits to drain cleaning. I mean, like you said, the fact that it reduces blockages should be a fairly obvious one. Sure, having a clean house is great, don’t get me wrong, but I can deal with a little mess (yes that is one of my many vices!). What I cannot deal with however, is a house that smells because the drains are clogged, or backed up, or whatever the cause may be. Ever since our big cleanup last year, we have kept the drains clear ever since. Thanks for the tips.

    • There are only two choices. You’re a saved believer who’s salvation is not to be question, or you’re a Christian hater sexual deviant and anything you say is to be discounted immediately. Stop muddying the water with facts!

    • Hei Monica, sÃ¥ nydelige bilder du har tatt under her. 🙂

    • I thought that when you call for the violent( it is the army after all) overthrow of your government you were committing treason. I guess in America you can call for violence against anyone and they call it free speech. No such thing as incitement or hate crimes. We will have to wait for the actual coupe attempt before we can call it anything I suppose.

    • Thanks again for this. I love this photo, the technical quality with the perfect "pint", and the perfect composition, the 2 main points I realized being:- the orientation: up and hard walking, down and easy by car.-The "tomare" line at the limit of the shadow.Certainly forget other points…Are we in Higashi-Ginza ? Toranomon ? looks like this is one of those central area where you don't get much individual houses even away from the big road.

  18. I lived in some old apartments during my time in college and I’m sure those drains were only cleaned out when they would no longer accept anything. Those drains were always getting blocked, and it was a pain sometimes. Now that I think about it, I remember a strange smell coming from the wall near my bed, I wonder if there was a pipe in there that had some build up. Interesting, thanks for the tips!

    • The majority of whites on Staten Island have Italian ancestry. The brash, trash talking culture of Sicily has been transported to that borough. You see that with the guido juiceheads. A lot of the representations of Italians in cinema and tv (Rocky Balboa, Vito Corleone, the Fonz) are a depiction of the machismo that's always been associated with them. East coast Italian and Irish ethnics are unpleasant and street tough enough that they even intimidate NAMs away from their neighborhoods. That's partly why whites have hung on in areas like SI and Southie.

    • Jeff: I totally agree. Which is why I give my hair stylist a big tip (well, big for me). She rocks when it comes to scalp massage. If you figure out how to get that marketed as a separate service, let me know. Or if you find someone who needs some practice clients, I’m in for that, too!Love your blog – keep up the great provo/evo questions (that’s provocative/evocative).

    • April 26, 2012 at 2:41 pmHa! Be unreasonable. Ok, then. Good point. Reasonable is how we live when we are not thinking about it. Autopilot. It blows.   Ash is right, in a way, moderation is for the lost but I gotta say as much as I see going whole hog is the right way it’s got to be the toughest thing anyone can do. Just sayin…..maybe i’m not there…..yet. Am I toast?   Very inspiring post Srini. Reply

  23. Great post! Thank you for helping me understand the benefits of regular drain cleaning. I really like how you said that “When you take the time to clean the drains regularly, you can prevent blockages. Small blockages can be annoying when you shower or use the sink, but a serious clog can be concerning.” My parents are always cleaning their drains and it has helped them to avoid any big problems and sewage blockages.

  24. My sister recently informed me that I should be doing drain cleanings regularly but I wasn’t sure why until coming across this. However, after reading this, I can see why they would be so beneficial. I like how you point out that not only will it reduce the blockage in your systems, but you can also limit foul smells that could be lingering. I imagine that it would be done a lot more effectively if done by a professional so I will have to call one this weekend.

  25. Thanks for the article. I did realize that by having a clean drain you end up reducing your expenses. I guess cleaning your drains is a great way to avoid flooding as well as broken plumbing. I like to have my drains cleaned once a month, mostly for cleanliness, but knowing that this can prevent possible higher expenses, later on, will be a better thought than just the fact that my home is cleaner. I really appreciate your tips, I hope to use them in the near future.

  26. Great post! Thank you for helping me understand the benefits of having my drains cleaned. I really like how you said that “Keeping the drains cleaned early on can prevent serious problems with the drains overflowing and leading to unsanitary conditions in the home.” I have never had my drains cleaned before but I can imagine how important it would be to make sure that a professional is the one to clean the drains so that the cleaning is done promptly and properly.

    • I’m a VERY petite woman with almost no curves. A small bust, small waist, small hips, but still struggle with the mutton top in jeans! I seem to carry all of my weight in my mid section as well. So my problem is this; everything that is in fashion is not flattering to my body! Obviously since I’m thinner, skinny jeans make me look more so. I need tops that enhance my bust area, but can’t seem to find any and I’m not really sure what jeans or jackets and coats I should buy. I feel like I have the worst body shape ever! NEED this book!

    • Do you mind if I quote a couple of your posts as long as I provide credit and sources back to your website? My blog site is in the exact same area of interest as yours and my users would truly benefit from some of the information you provide here. Please let me know if this ok with you. Thanks a lot!

    • Thats pretty cool. Just connect a dubbing cable between your phone and your pc and can record what you’ve just created. If you have music creation software you can create some really interesting tracks, and lay down vocals on top!

  28. I didn’t realize it was so important to have your drains cleaned. I wouldn’t want my home to start smelling, so I guess it’s time to get on a regular cleaning schedule. 29. I loved your suggestion to keep the drains clean to prevent odors coming into the home. Experiencing an odd smell could be an indicator it’s time to do some cleaning. It may also be a good idea to schedule times when you plan to clean and maintain your drains.

  30. I really like what you said about taking a precaution against what blockages go down the drain. This is something I need to work on with my kids. They let all sorts of things down their bathroom drain, and I need to watch that, and them know that they need to be careful. That way, we won’t have to have it cleaned out nearly as often.

  31. I had no idea that bad smells could be the result of a drain in your home. My kitchen has been producing some really bad odors lately and I really wasn’t sure what the cause was. I’ll have to hire a drain cleaning service and get that bad smell once and for all. Thanks for the advice!

  32. Thank you for the information. I just recently had drain cleaning done in my house because it was getting very clogged. I had not thought to do it regularly to reduce expenses, as you mentioned. How often would you recommend having drain cleaning done?

  33. I really like the fact that professional drain cleaning can help limit the amount of smells that come from them. The sink and shower drains in my bathroom tend to small bad when you get close, so when I wash my face in the morning, I have to keep my face as far away as possible. It would be nice to not have to worry about that every morning, and it would make my daily routine a lot easier as well!

  34. The drains in my home have been blocked lately. I know that I haven’t had them cleaned in a while and I definitely am going to start doing that more regularly so that there are less blockages. However, when do you think that I should be having my drains cleaned?

  35. I like that you point out that by having your drain regularly cleaned it can help limit the smells that can come from the sewers. Having a house that smells good is understandably a concern for all home owners. My sister is thinking of buying a house that might need the drains replaced, or at the very least cleaned. She might consider hiring a professional to go look at them for her before she makes her decision.

  36. Thanks for the great read. My father is a bit reluctant to get his drains professionally cleaned, so I’ve been looking more into the benefits of having it done. I like what you said about how clean drains can prevent serious cleanliness concerns, keep your home odor free and prevent sewer build up. If my father knew those risks, I’m sure he’d be more likely to have the pro’s come out and clean. No one likes a overflowing sewer.

  37. I really like your advice about how to reduce blockages. As you said, that can be very annoying. But, sometimes, they can be downright concerning. The last thing you want to deal with is a clogged drain that isn’t draining water or other things at all. Do you have any other tips about sewer cleaning?

  38. The drain in our shower has been having some issues, and so I have been considering hiring a plumber. I have not thought to have it cleaned regularly but that is a great idea. 40. You suggested that when the sewer system builds up, it ends up causing problems when you flush the toilet as they can start to overflow. My wife called me at work this morning because she said that water kept overflowing in the sink and would not drain. Do most plumbers have the tools and expertise to locate the problem and find a solution to this issue?

  41. I suggest that you should hire a service provider who is professional when cleaning drainage then check on how they do it so that after that you can do it by yourself. 🙂

  42. We have been living in our house for 3 years now and we haven’t had any problems. I liked when the article stated that having the drains cleaned yearly is a great way to prevent them from becoming too full. I will be sure to call an expert plumber to get my drain checked as to not overpay for water expenses!

  43. I love your idea of getting a professional plumber with a camera to inspect your drains regularly. I’ve never thought to try that, and I’ve lived in this house for 10 years without getting the drains checked at all. I’ve heard that it’s important to get your drains cleaned at least once a year, which is something I want to start doing. The older the house, the more susceptible the pipes.

  44. I like how you mentioned that making sure that your drains are clean is a great way to prevent odors in the kitchen and bathrooms. That is something that we really want to keep up with now that we are getting our home ready to sell. I never took into account the fact that the condition of the sewers mirror the condition of the houses they’re connected to. It’s good to know that there are professionals who take the time to clean the drains, and keep them in working condition.

  47. I didn’t realize that drain cleaning can help reduce odors coming from the sewers that are otherwise difficult to get rid of. My sister just moved into an older townhouse last month. This seems like an option that could help her get rid of the smell that the upstairs bathtub emits.

  48. Thanks for the advice on cleaning sewers properly, especially how a lack of cleanliness can lead to odor problems. My parents had an unpleasant smell after they had their drains cleaned, so this would be good to know in the future when I need to get mine cleaned. But smells aside, hygienic problems can be serious if the sewage leaks into the home, especially if it’s near the kitchen or if there are children in the house.

  51. I really like that you mentioned that clearing the drains regularly helps prevent the need to replace pipes. My wife recently showed me that our drain in the kitchen sink is clogged. I wasn’t able to fix it, so having a plumber come in and take care of it for us would be great.

  52. I’m glad you mentioned that cleaning your drain can limit sewer odors. After I do the dishes, my drain has a lot of food particles in it that give off a funny smell. Thank you for explaining how regular drain cleanings can improve the overall cleanliness of your home.

  53. I really liked how you pointed out that one of the benefits of cleaning the drain pipes regularly was the idea that there won’t be any build ups of weird smell from the sewers that can be pretty hard to get rid off. It would have been better if I read this article before though. Now, we’re all detecting a weird pungent smell from the sewers that normal air fresheners can’t get rid off. My sisters have been complaining about the smell a lot, so I decided that I need to call someone to do something about it. Thank for sharing, though. I’ll be sure to follow your tips from now on.

  54. We definitely need a drain cleaner. Like you said, we could get rid of the septic smell that’s always in our basement bathroom. I bet the drain is just filthy, so I’ll look into hiring someone.

  55. My husband has decided to have floor troughs in the kitchen of our small restaurant to make it easier to clean the floor. I like his idea since there are times that I clean the floors myself. I agree with you that regularly cleaning it will not only keep it from clogging, but it will remove the odors. Thanks for the information!

  56. I appreciate how you said that regular drain cleaning can help you to avoid clogs. My wife and I have noticed that we have a few drains that aren’t working very well. We’ll have to look into hiring someone to help us with stuff to ensure that we don’t have to worry about that happening anymore.

  57. Hello Jason
You have shared a nice blog. The benefits you have mentioned are really good. It will help for less expenses in sewer repairing. Few months back I have just repaired the sewer line in my house. I found little wet ground in my lawn, from where the sewer line is passed. Without wasting time I searched for reliable sewer repair. I found one service provider https://www.difrancowaterproofing.com/sewer-repair/
They repaired the pipeline and also advised for a regular cleaning. I agreed, it will keep my home clean and also reduce my future expense.

  58. My husband and I have noticed that our drains have a bit of an odor and we are thinking of getting them cleaned by a professional, so I am glad that I found this article. Also, the fact that it reduces blockages to the sower and the sink so that the drains can keep flowing freely.

  59. Thank you for pointing out that making sure the drains stay clean is a great way to prevent issues later on. My husband and I have noticed that our storm drain is clogged. I’ll have to look into finding the best service to come and get it working again.

  60. That is a good point that some homeowners may not be aware of problems with sewage systems overflowing until it is too late. Maybe it would be a good idea to have drain cleaning and sewage cleaning done regularly. That way we wouldn’t have to worry about the sewage overflowing.

  61. Something that I didn’t know was that an overflowing toilet can happen because of a sewer system back up. It would be good for us to get some drain cleaning done in the sewer and in the toilet. That way we wouldn’t have to worry about it overflowing at any time.

  62. I appreciate your suggestion to have a plumber look for other potential issues while performing a routine drain cleaning. My husband and I live in a house that was built in the 70s, so I’ve had concerns about our pipes starting to break down or having other issues. Having a plumber check during a routing drain cleaning sounds like the perfect opportunity to gain some peace of mind. Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll have to look for a plumber in my area who can do this!
